In a surprising turn of events, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his position on Monday, the first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament. The resignation, addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, was tendered with immediate effect. Dhankhar cited health concerns and the need to prioritize healthcare and abide by medical advice as the reasons for his departure, invoking Article 67(a) of the Constitution.
Dhankhar, 74, assumed office in August 2022 and was expected to serve until 2027. His decision to resign two years before the end of his term has stirred considerable discussion and speculation. According to Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution, a Vice-President can resign before completing their five-year term by submitting a written resignation to the President. The article states that "a Vice-President may, by writing under his hand addressed to the President, resign his office".
The resignation came as a shock to many, especially since Dhankhar had presided over the first sitting of the Rajya Sabha as chairperson just hours before. Earlier this month, Dhankhar had mentioned he would retire at the "right time". In his resignation letter, Dhankhar expressed his gratitude to President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the Union Cabinet of Ministers. He also conveyed his pride in being part of India's development as an economic power and a global entity.
The government has not yet responded to Dhankhar's resignation. Some sources suggest that the resignation was not entirely unexpected within government circles. Opposition leaders have expressed surprise, with some describing the move as "shocking" and "inexplicable".
Dhankhar's abrupt departure has triggered the process for electing a new Vice President. The Election Commission of India is expected to announce a fresh election for the post. Members of both Houses of Parliament are eligible to vote in the election for the next Vice President. Given the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA)'s majority in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, the alliance is likely to play a significant role in determining Dhankhar's successor. Potential candidates for the position could include governors, seasoned organizational leaders, or Union ministers.
During his tenure, Dhankhar oversaw significant reforms in the Rajya Sabha and worked towards making the House more environmentally friendly. He also faced an impeachment notice from the Opposition in December 2024, which was ultimately rejected on technical grounds.
Jagdeep Dhankhar is not the first Vice President to resign midterm. V.V. Giri and R. Venkataraman also resigned from the post to contest presidential elections.
