The ISKCON temple in Mumbai's Girgaon neighborhood received a bomb threat via email, prompting a police investigation and heightened security measures. The email warned that five RDX IEDs (improvised explosive devices) would be detonated within 16 hours if certain political demands related to Tamil Nadu were not met.
The threat was sent to the temple's official email address, info@iskconchowpatty.com, from an email ID named "Immanuel_sekaran@outlook.com". The sender demanded that the DMK government in Tamil Nadu implement the recommendations of the late Nainar Das, a leader of a Tamil Nadu-based police organization. Failure to comply, the email threatened, would result in explosions at the temple.
Following the threat, the Gamdevi police registered a case against an unknown person and initiated a full-scale investigation with the help of the crime branch and cyber experts. Mumbai Police also heightened surveillance in the area and alerted central and state security agencies. A team of local police and the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad inspected the temple and found nothing suspicious.
Police sources indicated that similar threat emails have been received in the past, following a comparable pattern. While no credible evidence or suspicious activity has been found so far during the investigation, authorities are taking the matter seriously and continuing with standard verification and security protocols.
This bomb threat is the latest in a series of similar emails sent to institutions across Mumbai. Over the past two months, more than 10 schools in Mumbai have received similar threats, as have the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange. These earlier threats were later found to be hoaxes after police investigations.
Rahul Shantaram Govekar, the Security Manager of the ISKCON temple, reported the threat to the police. According to Govekar's statement, he discovered the threatening email while checking the temple's official email ID. The email claimed that five RDX IEDs had been planted on the temple premises and would be detonated if the demands were not met.
The police have registered a complaint under section 351 (3) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and are currently tracing the email ID that sent the threat.
