An Indian man, who had been in Ireland for only three weeks, was assaulted and partially stripped in the Tallaght area of Dublin on Saturday evening, July 19, 2025. The incident is being investigated by Gardaí as a possible hate crime.
The man was attacked by a group of individuals who falsely accused him of acting inappropriately around children. These allegations were reportedly circulated online, but Garda sources have confirmed that there is no evidence to support these claims.
The victim, who is in his 40s, sustained several injuries, including wounds to his face, arms, and legs, and was found bleeding when emergency services arrived. He was taken to Tallaght University Hospital for treatment and was discharged on July 20.
The attack occurred at approximately 6 p.m. on Parkhill Road in Tallaght. According to investigators, some of the attackers have carried out unprovoked attacks on foreigners in the Tallaght area recently.
Local councillor Baby Pereppadan from Fine Gael visited the victim and told the Irish Independent that the man was in “shock” and unable to speak much. Pereppadan also called for an increased police presence in the area, stating that "small incidents like these are happening frequently in Tallaght".
Sinn Féin TD for Dublin South-West, Seán Crowe, condemned the incident, describing it as “vile and utterly unacceptable”. Crowe added that such attacks leave both newcomers and long-time residents afraid to go outside. "Anyone who thinks this sort of mindless, racist violence makes their community safer is lying and fooling no one,” he told the Irish Independent. Crowe stated that racist violence contributes to a sense of insecurity among residents, both new arrivals and long-time community members and that this is not the first such attack in the area, but it has to be the last.
The Indian Ambassador to Ireland has called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.
Paul Murphy, a People Before Profit TD, expressed his sympathy for the victim and his family. He also stated that the assault appeared to be the latest in a series of recent racially motivated attacks by a gang in the area and that those responsible must be found and stopped.
A woman who assisted the victim described a brutal attack in which the man was beaten, had his head rammed into a lamppost, and was stripped of his clothing. She used her cycling gear to compress the wounds and believed the incident was "pure racism".
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact Gardaí as investigations continue.
