Vince Gilligan, the creative force behind the acclaimed series Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, is venturing into new territory with an upcoming show set in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This new project, which has landed at Apple TV+, promises a departure from his signature crime dramas, diving instead into a "grounded genre drama" that explores the human condition in unexpected ways.

While specific details about the plot remain closely guarded, Gilligan has offered intriguing hints about the show's direction. He has stated that the series will explore philosophical themes and will be inspired by classic sci-fi films like E.T.. Unlike his previous works, this new show will not revolve around crime or methamphetamine. Instead, the story will center on a world that undergoes a sudden and dramatic shift in the very first episode, with the consequences of this change driving the narrative forward. Gilligan has also likened the show to The Twilight Zone, but set in contemporary times.

Adding to the anticipation, Apple TV+ recently released a cryptic teaser featuring a petri dish with a smiley face drawn inside, accompanied by the phrase "Happiness is Contagious". This has led to speculation about the show's themes, with some suggesting it might involve a virus or some other form of widespread change affecting society. A full trailer is expected to be released on Friday, July 25th, which may reveal more details.

The series reunites Gilligan with Rhea Seehorn, who played Kim Wexler in Better Call Saul. Gilligan has praised Seehorn's talent and described her character as "someone who's trying very hard to be good... a bit of a damaged hero, but she's a hero nonetheless". Karolina Wydra has also been cast in the series.

Production on the series has been underway in Albuquerque, New Mexico, a familiar setting for Gilligan's previous shows. Filming took place over seven months, and was temporarily delayed due to the 2023 WGA strike. The New Mexico Film Office has stated that the production will employ over 1,400 New Mexicans.

Apple TV+ has already given the show a two-season order, signaling strong confidence in Gilligan's vision. While an official release date has not yet been announced, the series is expected to premiere sometime in 2025. The show is being produced by High Bridge Productions, Bristol Circle Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television. Gilligan serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside Jeff Frost, Diane Mercer and Rhea Seehorn.
