The annual Amarnath Yatra has been temporarily suspended on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, for both the Pahalgam and Baltal routes due to continuous heavy rainfall in Kashmir. A senior official confirmed the suspension, emphasizing the need to ensure the safety of pilgrims.
The Jammu and Kashmir Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) has officially announced the halt. Heavy rains over the past couple of days have made it necessary to carry out restoration work on the tracks along both routes. Authorities have decided to suspend the Yatra considering the safety of the pilgrims. Yatris who stayed at the Panjtarni camp are being allowed to proceed down to Baltal under the supervision of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and Mountain Rescue Teams. The Yatra is expected to resume depending on weather conditions.
Earlier in July, the Yatra was suspended from Jammu due to a weather advisory forecasting heavy rains in the region. This marked the first instance of suspension from Jammu this year. Continuous heavy rains had necessitated restoration work on the tracks along both routes.
Prior to the suspension, nearly 2.5 lakh pilgrims had paid their obeisance at the 3,880-meter-high shrine since the Yatra commenced on July 3. Over 4 lakh people have registered online for the pilgrimage. Last year, the pilgrimage saw more than 5.10 lakh participants.
Unfortunately, earlier this month, a woman pilgrim lost her life, and three others were injured in a landslide along the Baltal route in the Ganderbal district. The injured were immediately taken to the Baltal base camp hospital, where Sona Bai (55), a resident of Rajasthan, was declared dead. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams were deployed to evacuate people from the accident site.
The 38-day pilgrimage is scheduled to conclude on August 9. Authorities are closely monitoring the weather situation and are committed to resuming the Yatra as soon as conditions become favorable.
