IndiGo has announced the cancellation of all flights to and from Amritsar, along with five other cities, for today, May 13, 2025. The other affected cities include Jammu, Chandigarh, Leh, Srinagar, and Rajkot. The airline cited passenger safety as the top priority in light of recent developments.
The decision to cancel flights comes amidst ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, which have led to airspace restrictions and heightened security measures. These tensions have caused disruptions to air travel in the region in recent days.
According to IndiGo's official statement, the cancellations are in effect for May 13, 2025. The airline conveyed its understanding of the disruption to travel plans and expressed regret for the inconvenience caused. IndiGo also stated that its teams are actively monitoring the situation and will promptly keep passengers informed of further updates.
Passengers are strongly advised to check their flight status on the IndiGo website or mobile app before heading to the airport. The airline has also assured passengers that their support channels are available to assist with any queries or concerns.
The situation has been evolving rapidly. On May 12, IndiGo announced that airports that had been closed due to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan were reopening and that the airline would progressively commence operations on the previously closed routes. However, the situation changed again on Monday evening, when an IndiGo flight en route to Amritsar from Delhi was forced to return to the national capital after precautionary blackout measures were enforced in Amritsar.
Several airports in northern and western India had been temporarily closed due to the prevailing security scenario. These closures and airspace restrictions followed a series of drone and missile attacks. While 32 airports had recently been cleared to resume commercial operations, the situation remains fluid.
Airlines and airport authorities are working to ensure a smooth transition back to normal operations, including the reallocation of slots, staff deployment, and crowd management. IndiGo has cautioned that there may still be delays and last-minute adjustments as services gradually return to normal.
IndiGo's decision to cancel flights highlights the challenges faced by airlines operating in regions with geopolitical instability. The safety and security of passengers and crew remain paramount, and airlines must take necessary precautions, even if it means disrupting travel plans.
