A software engineer in Bengaluru has been apprehended in connection with the theft of cryptocurrency valued at ₹379 crore from his employer, CoinDCX. The accused, Rahul Agarwal, was a software engineer at the company.
In a separate incident last year, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested Shubhang Jain, a 26-year-old B.Tech graduate from Haryana, for allegedly misappropriating cryptocurrency worth ₹56 crore from Cipher Technologies Pvt Ltd, a Bengaluru-based company. Jain worked as a software developer at Cipher Technologies between May 2021 and April 2022. His responsibilities included market analytics and finance, granting him access to the company's private crypto wallets. The stolen cryptocurrencies included Bitcoin, Binance, and Tether.
Cipher Technologies discovered the theft during an audit of its accounts and filed a complaint with the Subramanya Nagar police in April 2022. The case was subsequently transferred to the CID. The CID's investigation revealed that Jain had transferred the stolen cryptocurrencies to wallets belonging to his parents and close associates. He evaded arrest by frequently changing his location and avoiding a fixed phone number, often staying in luxury hotels. The police tracked him to Mumbai, where he was eventually apprehended.
In December 2024, a 39-year-old software engineer in Bengaluru lost ₹11.8 crore in a "digital arrest" scam. The victim received a call from someone impersonating a police officer, who claimed that his Aadhaar details were being misused for money laundering. The fraudsters, citing fake RBI guidelines, instructed him to transfer funds to various accounts for "verification purposes". Fearing legal repercussions, the engineer transferred the money over a period of time. He realized he had been scammed when the fraudsters demanded more money and filed a police complaint.
