The Jharkhand government has announced a three-day state mourning period from August 4th to August 6th, 2025, to honor the passing of former Chief Minister and Rajya Sabha MP Shibu Soren. Soren, a founding figure of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and a revered tribal leader, passed away on Monday morning at the age of 81 in a hospital in New Delhi after battling a prolonged illness.
During the state mourning, the national flag will be flown at half-mast on all buildings across Jharkhand. All state government offices will remain closed on August 4 and 5. All government-organized events have been suspended during this period.
Shibu Soren's mortal remains will be transported from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi to his official residence in Morhabadi, Ranchi, on Monday evening. On the morning of August 5, the body will be moved to the JMM party office, where workers and supporters can pay their final respects. Afterward, the former Chief Minister's body will be taken to the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly, where a state honors tribute will be held. The final rites will be performed later on August 5 at his ancestral village Nemra in Ramgarh district.
Soren was instrumental in the creation of Jharkhand and led the JMM party for decades. He was a champion of the separate Jharkhand state movement in the 1970s. Tributes are pouring in from across India.
The ongoing Monsoon Session of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly was adjourned sine die following the announcement of Soren's death. Speaker Rabindranath Mahto informed the legislators of the JMM supremo's passing before declaring the House proceedings concluded. The Speaker also posted on X, stating, “The news of the demise of the pioneer of Jharkhand movement, our guide 'Dishom Guru' respected Baba Shri Shibu Soren ji is extremely sad. The demise of our guardian...".
