A Congress MP, R. Sudha, experienced a shocking chain-snatching incident during her morning walk in Delhi's high-security Chanakyapuri area on Monday. The incident has sparked concerns about safety in the diplomatic enclave.
Sudha, a Lok Sabha member from Tamil Nadu’s Mayiladuthurai, was walking with DMK MP Rajathi Salma near the Poland Embassy around 6:15 a.m. when the incident occurred. A man wearing a full helmet and riding a scooter approached them from the opposite direction, snatched her gold chain weighing more than four sovereigns, and fled.
The MP sustained injuries to her neck and her clothes were torn in the scuffle. "As he pulled the chain from my neck, I have suffered injuries on my neck,” she stated. She also recounted that she and her fellow MP cried for help after the incident.
Sudha expressed her shock and trauma, emphasizing that the incident took place in a high-security zone with constant security. She questioned the safety of women in the national capital, stating, "If a woman cannot walk safely in this high-priority zone in the national capital of India, where else can we feel safe and do our routine without fearing for our limbs, lives, and valuables". She described the attack as a "blatant attack on a woman, who is a Member of Parliament, in a high-security zone like Chanakyapuri which is full of embassies and protected institutions," and found it "highly shocking to say the least".
The Congress MP reported the incident to a mobile Delhi Police patrol and was advised to file a written complaint at the local police station. She has also written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging him to take immediate action to track down the culprit and address the security concerns in the area. She lamented the lack of adequate security that allowed such an attack to occur on a Member of Parliament in a high-security zone.
Sudha is currently staying at Tamil Nadu House as her official accommodation in Delhi is not yet ready. She is in Delhi to attend the parliament's monsoon session.
