Manchester United have officially announced the signing of Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig. The 22-year-old joins the Red Devils on a five-year contract, becoming manager Ruben Amorim's fourth major signing of the summer. The deal is reportedly worth an initial £66.3 million (€76.5 million), with a further £7.37 million (€8.5 million) in performance-related add-ons.
Sesko was reportedly in Manchester on Friday and underwent his medical. He is expected to be unveiled to the fans at Old Trafford before the pre-season friendly against Fiorentina on Saturday.
The signing of Sesko marks a significant statement of intent from Manchester United, who are looking to bolster their attacking options after a disappointing 2024/25 season. The club has already spent roughly £120 million on Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha this summer.
Sesko expressed his excitement about joining Manchester United, stating, “The history of Manchester United is obviously very special, but what really excites me is the future. When we discussed the project, it was clear that everything is in place for this team to continue to grow and compete for the biggest trophies again soon". He also highlighted the positive environment at the club, saying, “From the moment that I arrived, I could feel the positive energy and family environment that the club has created. It is clearly the perfect place to reach my maximum level and fulfil all of my ambitions".
United's director of football, Jason Wilcox, praised Sesko's qualities, noting, “Benjamin possesses a rare combination of electrifying pace and the ability to physically dominate defenders, making him one of the most exceptional young talents in world football". Wilcox added that the club's data analysis indicated that Sesko has the "required qualities and personality to thrive at Manchester United" and that he is joining "the perfect environment to support him to reach his world-class potential" under Ruben Amorim's guidance.
Sesko's arrival at Old Trafford comes after a period of intense competition for his signature, with Newcastle United also making a strong push to sign the striker. According to reports, Newcastle even made a second bid of £69.7 million plus add-ons, which was higher than Manchester United's initial offer. However, Sesko ultimately chose to join the Red Devils.
The Slovenian international scored 13 times in the Bundesliga last season and is considered one of Europe's most promising young strikers. He was absent from RB Leipzig's pre-season friendly against Atalanta due to his expected departure from the club.
With the new Premier League season approaching quickly, Manchester United are working to integrate Sesko into the team as soon as possible. The Red Devils will face Arsenal at Old Trafford in their opening game of the season, and Sesko could potentially make his debut in that match.
The arrival of Sesko could have implications for other strikers at the club, including Rasmus Hojlund. However, Hojlund has reportedly stated that he is determined to fight for his place at Old Trafford.
