Amit Jani, the producer of the controversial film 'Udaipur Files,' claims to be receiving death threats following the film's release. The film, which depicts the 2022 murder of Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur, has faced numerous legal and censorship hurdles. Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor, was murdered for supporting Nupur Sharma, a former BJP spokesperson.
Jani reported receiving threatening calls from a man named Tabrez, who threatened violence. In response to these threats, Jani has requested police action. He has already been provided with 'Y'-category security. This security detail includes 11 personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The security cover applies in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. Jani has expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for providing him with the security.
'Udaipur Files' stars Vijay Raaz as Kanhaiya Lal. The film's release has been fraught with obstacles, including censorship demands and legal challenges. The Delhi High Court had initially ordered a stay on the film's release on July 11, 2025. The Supreme Court later directed the Delhi High Court to address the challenges against the government's approval of the film's release. Ultimately, the film was cleared for release in theaters on August 8, 2025, after the Supreme Court ruling.
Prior to its release, the central government withdrew an order recommending six cuts in 'Udaipur Files'. The government decided to hear the parties involved afresh and issue a revised order. Jani met with Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to discuss the obstacles to the film's release.
'Udaipur Files' is based on the реальный случай murder of Kanhaiya Lal, which occurred in June 2022. Lal was murdered by Mohammad Riyaz and Mohammad Ghous for allegedly sharing a social media post supporting Nupur Sharma's controversial comments on Prophet Muhammad. The assailants filmed the murder and released a video claiming responsibility. The case is being investigated by the NIA, and the accused have been booked under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. The trial is pending before a special NIA court in Jaipur.
Amit Jani is also the head of the Uttar Pradesh Navnirman Sena, a right-wing organization. He has a history of being involved in contentious issues and has several pending cases against him. These cases include charges related to vandalism, dowry harassment, and making threats.
