A portion of an under-construction structure collapsed at the Mahalaxmi Temple in Koradi, Nagpur, during the late hours of Saturday, August 9, 2025. The incident occurred between 8:00 PM and 8:15 PM on the Khaparkheda-Koradi Temple road, while construction work was underway on a gate.
Initial reports indicate that a slab of the under-construction gate collapsed at the Koradi Mandir premises, trapping several workers under the debris. According to police sources, the accident took place around 8:30 PM. Thirteen workers were injured in the mishap, with two reported to be in critical condition. However, initial reports stated that there were no fatalities. All injured individuals were promptly admitted to the hospital for treatment.
The under-construction gate was part of a tourism development project undertaken by NMRDA. The structure involved the construction of a grand entrance with four pillars, and the slab was being placed on these pillars using centering. The collapse occurred suddenly, causing both the slab and centering to fall, trapping the workers below.
Upon receiving news of the accident, district authorities, including District Collector Dr. Vipin Itankar, Deputy Commissioner of Police Niketan Kadam, along with the Koradi police and the NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) team, rushed to the scene. Rescue teams worked swiftly to remove the debris and extricate the trapped laborers. Authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident. The investigation aims to determine the cause of the collapse and to ensure that all safety standards were being adhered to during the construction process.
Local police have increased security at the site to manage the crowd and maintain order. Rescue operations were expected to continue late into the night, with concerns that more workers might still be trapped under the rubble.
The accident raises serious questions about the safety standards employed during the construction. A thorough investigation is underway by the administration and the NDRF to prevent future incidents of this nature.
