The producer of "Udaipur Files," Amit Jani, claims to be receiving death threats following the film's release on August 8, 2025. The film is based on the 2022 murder of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor from Udaipur who was killed for allegedly supporting a social media post backing Nupur Sharma. Sharma had made controversial remarks about the Prophet Muhammad.

Jani stated that he received calls from an individual identifying himself as Tabrez from Bihar, who threatened to bomb or shoot him. Jani has requested police intervention and already has "Y"-category security. This security detail includes 8 to 11 personnel, including commandos, providing round-the-clock protection within Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. The Supreme Court had previously allowed Jani, along with the film's director and Kanhaiya Lal's son, to seek police protection, noting that authorities should take steps to ensure their safety if credible threats were perceived.

"Udaipur Files" faced numerous delays due to censorship and legal challenges before its release. The Delhi High Court initially stayed the film's release, but the Supreme Court directed the High Court to address the challenges against the government's approval of the film. Ultimately, the film was cleared for release with some changes.

The film depicts the events surrounding the murder of Kanhaiya Lal, who was killed in his shop by two men wielding cleavers on June 28, 2022. The assailants filmed the act and circulated the video online, claiming responsibility for the killing as revenge for Lal's support of Nupur Sharma. The murder sparked widespread outrage and led to curfews and internet suspensions in Udaipur.

"Udaipur Files" is written and directed by Bharat S Shrinate, starring Vijay Raaz as Kanhaiya Lal. The film aims to portray the events leading up to the murder, the public outrage, and the fight for justice. The filmmakers have stated that the movie does not target any specific religion but aims to highlight the problem of terrorism.

The release of "Udaipur Files" has been met with mixed reactions. Some civil rights groups and individuals allege that the film promotes communal hatred. Conversely, Kanhaiya Lal's sons watched the film and expressed their hope that it would bring them justice. A seat was reserved for Kanhaiya Lal during the viewing, with his photograph placed between his sons.

Amit Jani, the producer, has a history of controversies. He has been associated with right-wing activism and has faced numerous cases, including charges related to vandalism and making threats.

Despite the controversies and threats, "Udaipur Files" is now playing in theaters. The film's release follows a long legal battle and government clearances.
