A protest marking the one-year anniversary of the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case in Kolkata turned chaotic on Saturday, with the victim's mother alleging that she was roughed up by the police during a march towards the state secretariat, Nabanna. The woman claimed that female police personnel assaulted her without provocation while she was en route to join the demonstration.
The mother stated that in the ensuing scuffle, her traditional conch shell bangle (shankha) was broken, and she sustained a head injury. She questioned the police's actions, asking why they were being stopped. The protesters, including the victim's family, were marching to Nabanna to demand justice for the young woman who was brutally raped and murdered within the state-run hospital's premises last year. They are calling for the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, citing her failure to protect women.
The police blocked the protest, resulting in clashes as demonstrators attempted to march towards Nabanna. The victim's father alleged that police tried to prevent people from reaching the assembly point by stopping their vehicles en route, despite the court's permission for a peaceful rally. Tensions further escalated when protesters attempted to breach the barricades.
Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari, along with BJP MLAs, joined the victim's parents at Dorina Crossing in Esplanade, central Kolkata, without any party insignia. Adhikari, along with BJP leader Agnimitra Paul and other MLAs, staged a sit-in protest at the Park Street-J L Nehru Road crossing. Adhikari claimed that over 100 protesters, including himself and other BJP leaders, were injured in the police action and that the victim's parents were also injured during the lathi charge.
The situation grew tense as some protesters reached Santragachi in the Howrah district and attempted to breach the iron barricades erected by the police as part of the 'Nabanna Chalo Abhiyan'. They raised slogans demanding justice for the RG Kar victim and expressed their determination to reach the state secretariat despite the blockades.
Suvendu Adhikari issued a warning, stating that Mamata Banerjee would "pay dearly for this" and that the protests would only intensify. The victim's family had previously sought intervention from the Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the CBI, expressing dissatisfaction with the investigation into the case.
