The Election Commission has taken cognizance of the allegations leveled against Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sinha regarding the possession of two voter IDs and has issued a notice to him. The notice was issued by the Bankipur Electoral Registration Officer (ERO), seeking an explanation from Sinha by August 14th.
The controversy arose after Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav claimed that Sinha holds two voter IDs from different assembly constituencies. Yadav alleged that Sinha's name appears in the electoral rolls for both the Lakhisarai assembly constituency and the Bankipur assembly constituency in Patna district. He further claimed that Sinha has two different Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers and that the records even list differing ages for him – 57 in one and 60 in the other. Yadav also pointed out that this discrepancy occurred after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls by the Election Commission in Bihar, raising questions about the integrity of the process. He stated that the information is present in the new voter list shared with political parties. According to Yadav, there are only two possibilities: either the SIR process is fraudulent, or the Deputy CM is involved in fraud himself.
In response to the allegations, Sinha has denied any wrongdoing. He clarified that his family's names were previously listed in Patna and that in April 2024, he applied to have his name added to the Lakhisarai Assembly voter list and simultaneously requested its removal from Bankipur. Sinha stated that he has proof of applying for the removal from Bankipur. He explained that when his name wasn't removed, he contacted the Block Level Officer (BLO), submitted a written application, and obtained a receipt. He insists that he votes from only one place, Lakhisarai. Sinha has also accused Yadav of engaging in "jungle raj" tactics.
Patna's District Magistrate has also requested Sinha to respond to the allegations of holding two EPIC IDs. The Election Commission is currently investigating the matter. Sinha has asked Yadav to apologize for making false claims. He maintains that he applied to move his name from Bankipur to Lakhisarai last year, but the removal was delayed.
