Heavy rainfall has lashed parts of Delhi, causing waterlogging and traffic disruptions in several areas. The downpour, which occurred overnight, brought relief from the humidity but also created challenges for commuters. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that light showers will continue until August 13, with moderate rainfall expected between August 14 and 17.
The heavy rain has led to water accumulation on roads, causing vehicles to move slowly. Areas such as Panchkuian Marg, Mathura Road, Shastri Bhawan, RK Puram, Moti Bagh, and Kidwai Nagar have been particularly affected. Traffic Police issued alerts warning of congestion on roads like New Rohtak Road, Zakhira Railway Underpass, GTK Depot, Jahangirpuri, and Adarsh Nagar due to flooding. Delhi Airport advised passengers to use the metro and arrive early to avoid delays due to waterlogging near the airport.
In addition to traffic disruptions, a building collapse was reported in the Hari Nagar area of Jaitpur in South East Delhi. The Delhi Fire Services dispatched fire tenders to conduct rescue operations. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
The weather forecast indicates a likelihood of continued rainfall in the coming days. The IMD has predicted light rain until August 13, followed by moderate rainfall between August 14 and 17. There is a 10% chance of rain during the day and night on Tuesday, August 12, and a 10% chance of rain during the day and a 20% chance of rain at night on Wednesday, August 13. From August 14 to 17, there is a greater chance of scattered thunderstorms and heavy thunderstorms.
The heavy rain has also impacted neighboring areas such as Noida and Greater Noida. In Greater Noida West, water submerged stretches outside major condominiums, and several high-rise basements were inundated.
While the rain has brought relief from the humidity, it has also caused significant disruption to daily life in Delhi and surrounding areas. Authorities are working to drain accumulated water and manage the traffic situation. Residents are advised to stay informed about weather updates and avoid non-essential travel.
The IMD has also forecast heavy rainfall in parts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh over the next week, with some areas of Uttarakhand possibly receiving up to 21 cm of rain on August 13. A fresh wet spell is expected from August 13 to 16 in Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and coastal Andhra Pradesh.
