SpiceJet is set to expand its fleet by inducting five more Boeing 737 aircraft ahead of the winter season in 2025. The airline has finalized a lease agreement for these aircraft to meet the anticipated surge in travel demand during the winter and early summer seasons. Most of these aircraft are expected to arrive in October 2025, with a few arriving a couple of weeks earlier. The aircraft will remain with the airline until May 2026. These additions will be inducted under damp lease arrangements.
This latest agreement follows SpiceJet's announcement last month of inducting five Boeing 737s on damp lease from another operator, bringing the total number of new fleet additions to 10. The airline is also reportedly in advanced discussions to lease more aircraft before the winter 2025 schedule begins.
Debojo Maharshi, Chief Business Officer of SpiceJet, stated that the airline is fully prepared to meet the surge in travel demand for the upcoming winter and early summer seasons. He added that the induction of these additional Boeing 737s would ensure passengers have more choices, greater connectivity, and a reliable, on-time travel experience.
SpiceJet operates a fleet of Boeing 737s and Q-400s and is among India's largest regional carriers, operating multiple flights under the UDAN scheme. Many of its aircraft feature SpiceMax, which offers spacious economy-class seating.
The company's share price saw a rise of 2.83%, with the share price at Rs 35.25 at 10:11 AM IST on August 13, 2025.
This fleet expansion is part of SpiceJet's larger strategy to scale up its operations across domestic and international routes. The airline aims to improve domestic and international connectivity while optimizing operational costs. The damp lease model allows for quicker integration of aircraft into active service compared to full dry leases. Under this arrangement, operational crew responsibilities are shared between the lessor and SpiceJet.
On July 25, 2025, SpiceJet announced it would lease five Boeing 737 aircraft under a damp lease model, where the lessor provides some operational services along with the aircraft, while the airline controls other elements. SpiceJet's decision to expand its fleet with five Boeing 737 aircraft by October 2025 is a clear step toward capacity enhancement and operational strengthening.
The airline's current fleet stands at 53 aircraft, with the Boeing 737 model already comprising a significant share — including 737-700s, -800s, -900ERs, and MAX 8 variants. The incoming aircraft will be added under a damp lease agreement, meaning the aircraft will be provided along with a partial crew, but key functions such as cabin service and overall operations will be handled by SpiceJet.
