Marathi actress Jyoti Chandekar passed away on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at the age of 68 in Pune. Chandekar, known for her role as Poorna Aji in the TV show "Tharala Tar Mag," had been undergoing treatment for a prolonged illness. Her death has been met with mourning in the Marathi film and television industry.
Her funeral was held on August 17 at the Vaikunth Crematorium in Pune. A video captured the emotional moment of her daughter, actress Tejaswini Pandit, breaking down in tears while performing her mother's last rites. MNS Chief Raj Thackeray was among those who paid their last respects.
Tejaswini Pandit shared a statement on social media in Marathi, expressing deep sorrow and mentioning that her mother lived life on her own terms and always smiled wholeheartedly. Chandekar is survived by her two daughters, Tejaswini Pandit and Pornima Pandit, and was married to Ranjit Pandit.
Jyoti Chandekar was a well-known face in the Marathi industry and made her debut with the film "Aga Bai Arrecha!". She was also recognized for her performance as Sindhutai's mother in the 2010 film "Mee Sindhutai Sapkal". Tejaswini Pandit and Jyoti Chandekar worked together in the award-winning film "Ticha Umbartha," where Chandekar played the mother-in-law of Pandit's character. Their performances in the film were widely appreciated.
Star Pravah, the channel airing "Tharala Tar Mag," expressed grief through a social media tribute. Marathi stars, including Samruddhi Kelkar, Samir Paranjpe, and Surekha Kudachi, also mourned her death.
In 2024, Chandekar had fallen ill on the sets of "Tharala Tar Mag" due to low sodium levels and was hospitalized, taking a two-month break before resuming work. She described it as feeling like she had come back from the brink of death and appreciated the production team for waiting for her return.
