Naveen Patnaik, the former Chief Minister of Odisha and current Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, was hospitalized in Bhubaneswar on Sunday, August 17, 2025, due to dehydration. The 78-year-old leader was admitted to SUM Ultimate Medicare at approximately 5:15 PM. According to hospital sources, his condition is currently stable, and he is responding well to treatment.
Patnaik reportedly complained of uneasiness on Saturday night at his residence, Naveen Niwas. Doctors were called, and after initial examinations, they advised that he be hospitalized. While earlier reports suggested age-related ailments as a possible cause, doctors have confirmed that dehydration was the primary reason for his admission. He remains under observation at the hospital.
The news of Patnaik's hospitalization prompted reactions from political figures, including current Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who wished him a speedy recovery. Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling and Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan also visited the hospital to inquire about his health.
Patnaik recently underwent spinal surgery for cervical arthritis in Mumbai at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital on June 22, 2025. He had announced his plans for the surgery on June 18, mentioning that Dr. Ramakant Panda was coordinating the procedure. He was discharged and returned to Odisha on July 12. Upon his return, Patnaik expressed his gratitude to the medical team and well-wishers for their support during his recovery.
Naveen Patnaik served as the Chief Minister of Odisha for 24 consecutive years, from 2000 to 2024. After stepping down from the position following the 2024 Assembly elections, he assumed the role of Leader of the Opposition. During his absence for the surgery and recovery, senior leaders of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) oversaw the party's operations.
