The INDIA bloc has announced former Supreme Court Judge B. Sudershan Reddy as their candidate for the upcoming Vice-Presidential election. This decision was finalized in a meeting led by Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress President. Reddy will be competing against the NDA's nominee, C P Radhakrishnan. The Vice-Presidential election is scheduled for September 9.
B. Sudershan Reddy was born on July 8, 1946, in Akula Mylaram Village, Ranga Reddy district, Andhra Pradesh. He received his law degree from Osmania University in 1971. Reddy started his legal practice focusing on civil and constitutional matters under K. Pratap Reddy, a Senior Advocate of the Andhra Pradesh High Court. He was appointed as Government Pleader in the High Court on August 8, 1988, and later became the Additional Standing Counsel for the Central Government. In 1993, he was elected as the President of the Andhra Pradesh High Court Advocates Association and also served as the Legal Advisor of Osmania University.
Reddy's career advanced when he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on May 2, 1993. He then became the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court on December 5, 2005. His career reached a high point when he was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Supreme Court of India on January 12, 2007, where he served until his retirement on July 8, 2011. After retiring from the Supreme Court, Reddy assumed the role of the first Lokayukta of Goa in March 2013 but resigned in October 2013 due to personal reasons.
The INDIA bloc's decision to field a candidate for the Vice-Presidential election is seen as an effort to challenge the BJP's nominee and highlight their ideological differences. Some reports suggest the decision to nominate a candidate from Tamil Nadu was an attempt to counter the BJP's influence in the southern state, given that Radhakrishnan has roots in Tamil Nadu.
Following the announcement of his candidacy, Sudershan Reddy appealed to all political parties, including those within the NDA, to support his nomination. He expressed confidence in the election and stated that as the Opposition's candidate, he represents 60% of India. The nomination of Reddy, who has a legal career spanning five decades, underscores the INDIA bloc's focus on social justice and progressive legal principles.
