A Kolkata-bound Alliance Air flight was compelled to return to Guwahati midway on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, due to a technical snag, prompting a full-scale emergency at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport.
The Alliance Air flight, en route to Kolkata, took off from Guwahati at 1:09 PM. However, shortly after departure, the flight crew detected a technical issue, leading them to turn the aircraft back to Guwahati. In response to the situation, a full emergency was declared at LGBI Airport at 1:42 PM.
An airport spokesperson confirmed the safe landing of the flight at 2:27 PM, after which the emergency was withdrawn at 2:40 PM. The spokesperson further stated that all passengers and crew members were safe and had been provided with necessary support. "Passengers were safely deboarded and assisted by terminal staffers," the spokesperson noted. The airline coordinated alternative onward travel arrangements for the passengers, while the LGBI Airport's terminal operations team remained on standby to provide any necessary support.
Alliance Air also issued a statement confirming the incident and the safety of everyone on board. The airline has initiated an internal investigation to determine the cause of the technical problem.
The airport spokesperson clarified that the incident did not impact regular flight operations at LGBI Airport.
This incident follows a recent directive from a District Consumer Commission, which ordered Alliance Air to pay ₹50,000 to a passenger for a six-hour flight delay in June 2022. The commission noted that passengers were deboarded without essential provisions and proper information, which they termed "mental torture".
