Uvis Balinskis' future with the Florida Panthers appears uncertain, despite having a two-year contract extension that runs through the 2025-26 season.

Balinskis, a 29-year-old Latvian defenseman, initially joined the Panthers organization with promise. In April 2023, he signed a one-year, entry-level contract after being scouted while playing in the Czech Extraliga. His transition to North American play was seen as a success, earning him a two-year contract extension in January 2024. During the 2023-24 season, Balinskis made his NHL debut, playing 18 games and recording two points. He also played seven games for the Charlotte Checkers, the Panthers' AHL affiliate, where he tallied seven points.

However, recent observations suggest a potential shift in the Panthers' confidence in Balinskis. While he was re-signed by the Panthers in January, he may not be part of the team's long-term plans.

Despite limited playing time in the playoffs, Balinskis has achieved significant milestones, including having his name on the Stanley Cup after the Panthers' victory in 2025. He was also selected to represent Latvia in the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Balinskis' versatility was showcased when he transitioned to forward due to injuries within the team. Although he hadn't played forward since he was 14, he embraced the role when asked by coach Paul Maurice. Maurice praised Balinskis' work ethic, noting his willingness to adapt benefits the team.

Throughout his career, Balinskis has demonstrated his talent on both the international and professional stages. He has represented Latvia in multiple IIHF World Championships, including the 2023 tournament where he helped his country win its first-ever bronze medal. Before joining the Panthers, Balinskis played in the KHL and Czech Extraliga, earning recognition as the Extraliga's Best Defenseman in 2022-23.
