Son Ye Jin recently revealed a candid and somewhat shocking experience she had while working with director Park Chan Wook on their upcoming film, "No Other Choice". The incident, which involved her dance scenes being cut from the movie, highlights Park Chan Wook's high standards and bluntness, even towards seasoned actors like Son Ye Jin.
During a production briefing held in Yongsan, Seoul on August 19, 2025, Son Ye Jin shared behind-the-scenes stories from the making of "No Other Choice". She confessed to feeling like a rookie again, especially while working alongside veteran director Park Chan Wook and her senior co-star, Lee Byung Hun. Son Ye Jin, known for her roles in popular dramas like "Crash Landing on You," stars in "No Other Choice" as A-ra, the cheerful and strong wife of the main character, Mansu. Mansu, played by Lee Byung Hun, faces unexpected job loss and fights to protect his family.
The actress then recounted a particular incident involving a dance scene. To prepare for it, she practiced diligently for nearly three months. However, despite her efforts, director Park Chan Wook was not impressed. According to Son Ye Jin, he told her, "I thought you'd be better since you said you practiced so much". Son Ye Jin admitted she was taken aback by his directness, thinking, "How could he say that to me?".
To add insult to injury, Park Chan Wook apparently didn't believe she had spent three months practicing, remarking that her hard work "doesn't really show". Ultimately, all of Son Ye Jin's dance scenes were cut from "No Other Choice". Although she shared this story in a lighthearted manner, it revealed the director's exacting expectations.
Despite the harsh critique, Son Ye Jin expressed her admiration for Park Chan Wook, stating that the biggest reason she chose "No Other Choice" as her comeback project was her desire to work with him. She also noted that Lee Byung Hun's casting further solidified her decision, fearing she would regret missing the opportunity.
"No Other Choice" marks Son Ye Jin's return to the screen after her marriage to Hyun Bin and the birth of their son in 2022. The film has garnered significant attention, having been selected to screen at the Venice International Film Festival on August 29, 2025, and the Busan International Film Festival on September 17, 2025. It is also an official selection for the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival.
The movie, based on the novel "The Ax" by Donald E. Westlake, is a dark comedy about a man who loses his job and his struggle to protect his family. The cast includes Lee Sung-min, Yeom Hye-ran, Cha Seung-won, and Park Hee-soon.
