A YouTuber from Odisha's Mayurbhanj district has been arrested after a video surfaced showing him cooking and consuming a protected species of monitor lizard. The accused, identified as Rupa Nayak, is a resident of Asanbani village within the Champajhar section of the Thakurmunda forest range.

According to reports, Nayak claimed to have discovered a dead monitor lizard by the roadside near Banta while returning from his in-laws' residence in Bhadrak. He then allegedly transported the carcass home, where he proceeded to butcher and cook the reptile, filming the entire process. The video was subsequently uploaded to social media platforms, including Facebook and YouTube, where it quickly gained traction and sparked outrage.

The video's rapid spread online caught the attention of the Forest Department, prompting them to launch a suo motu investigation into the incident. Following news broadcasts that highlighted the video, authorities registered a case and took Nayak into custody. During questioning, Nayak reportedly confessed to the act.

The Forest Department has charged Nayak under multiple sections of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, including Sections 2(16)(a)(b), 9, 39(1)(b), 48(a)(b), and 50(1). The case has been registered as Case No. 68 under the Thakurmunda forest range. Nayak has since been produced in court for further legal proceedings.

Monitor lizards are a protected and, in some cases, endangered species, and hunting, harming, or consuming them is a serious offense that carries potential imprisonment and fines. Forest officials have reiterated the strict regulations surrounding the protection of wildlife and the consequences of violating these laws.

This incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for stricter enforcement of wildlife protection laws and increased awareness about the importance of biodiversity conservation. The case serves as a reminder of the potential legal ramifications of engaging in activities that harm or endanger protected species, particularly when documented and shared on social media platforms. It also highlights the role social media plays in bringing illegal activities to the attention of law enforcement.
