A man from Madhya Pradesh experienced a harrowing ordeal after traveling 100 km to meet a Facebook friend. Upon arrival at the girl's village in Mauganj, Rewa district, he was allegedly captured by her family members and subjected to severe physical assault.
According to police reports, the man, a resident of Baikunthpur, had befriended the girl on Facebook. He then decided to meet her in person on Saturday in Piprahi village. However, the meeting took a dark turn when the girl's family allegedly tied him up with ropes and beat him for approximately 13 hours, from 9 pm Saturday to 10 am the following day. It is also alleged that the assault was filmed, and video clips of the incident have been circulating on social media.
As of Wednesday, no formal complaint had been registered at the Hanumana police station. However, Superintendent of Police RS Prajapati stated that the police have been instructed to gather information about the incident and take appropriate legal action.
This incident is not isolated, as other cases in Madhya Pradesh involving relationships that began on social media have also resulted in violence. In one instance, a man allegedly abducted and gang-raped a 17-year-old Facebook friend in Gwalior with the help of his aides. In another case, a minor girl from Jabalpur was allegedly held hostage and raped for three days by a man she befriended on social media and his friend. In 2016, a man from Indore killed a 16-year-old girl for blocking him on Facebook.
In light of these incidents, authorities are likely to face increasing pressure to address the potential dangers of online relationships and ensure the safety of individuals who choose to meet their social media contacts in person. It also highlights the importance of caution and awareness when engaging with people online, especially for young and vulnerable individuals.
