In a strategic move to fortify national security, India has unveiled a new security doctrine that outlines a series of significant measures, signaling a robust and comprehensive approach to address evolving threats. This doctrine encompasses five key "new normals" concerning Pakistan, the ambitious "Sudarshan Chakra" defense shield slated for completion by 2035, and a substantial push towards strengthening the nation's defense capabilities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced "Mission Sudarshan Chakra" during his Independence Day address, emphasizing the need for a modernized and potent security apparatus. Inspired by the divine weapon of Lord Krishna, this initiative aims to provide a comprehensive security cover to strategic and civilian locations across India, including hospitals, railways, and religious sites. The mission underscores the government's commitment to extending comprehensive protection beyond conventional military zones.

The "Sudarshan Chakra" shield will be an indigenously developed, multi-layered air and missile defense system integrated with counter-offensive capabilities. It will feature an overlapping network of early-warning and tracking sensors, robust command and control posts, and land- and sea-based batteries of advanced interceptor missiles. Effective use of space-based assets will also be crucial for early warning and threat tracking. The system will be continuously expanded, strengthened, and modernized to cater to future warfare needs. The goal is to have the system fully deployed nationwide by 2035.

This announcement follows recent cross-border tensions and threats, including reported reckless statements from Pakistan Army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir regarding potential destruction of Indian dams and nuclear threats. Modi stated that the mission would incorporate a Precise Target System and cutting-edge weaponry to "neutralize enemy targets and also hit back in a stronger way". This points to an impending expansion of India's conventional arsenal, including the induction of new missiles like the Pralay and long-range land-attack cruise missiles, along with increasing the strike range of BrahMos missiles.

The doctrine also emphasizes indigenization of core defense technologies. Modi highlighted the need for domestically produced engines for fighter aircraft, signifying a push towards self-reliance in critical defense areas. This focus on indigenous development aligns with the broader goal of creating a defense industry that not only secures the nation but also contributes to economic growth and technological advancement.

This comprehensive security doctrine signals a paradigm shift in India's approach to national defense, characterized by proactive measures, technological advancement, and a commitment to safeguarding its citizens and strategic interests. The "five new normals" likely refer to this integrated approach, encompassing a more assertive stance towards Pakistan, the "Sudarshan Chakra" shield, the focus on indigenous defense production, and a willingness to project power beyond its borders.
