Coleman Wong is on the cusp of making history at the US Open, with a victory in his second qualifying match bringing him one step closer to becoming the first player from Hong Kong to qualify for the Grand Slam tournament. The 21-year-old Hong Kong native defeated Italy's Matteo Gigante 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 on Thursday, August 21, 2025, setting up a final qualifying round match against Britain's Billy Harris.

Wong's path to this historic moment began with a strong performance in the first round of qualifying, where he defeated Luxembourg's Chris Rodesch in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Ranked 177th in the world, Wong overcame his 159th-ranked opponent with a dominant display after a competitive first set. Wong is currently ranked No. 172 in singles.

The upcoming match against Harris represents a significant opportunity for Wong to break new ground for Hong Kong tennis. Should he emerge victorious, he will become the first player from Hong Kong to participate in the US Open proper. While two men representing the city have previously competed in Grand Slam events, those appearances were limited to Wimbledon, with the last occurring in 1954. Ip Koon-hung played at Wimbledon in 1951 and 1952, and Edward Tsai reached the second round there in 1953 and 1954. No one from Hong Kong has ever appeared at a Grand Slam outside of Wimbledon.

Coleman Wong has already achieved several milestones in his young career. He is the highest-ranked male tennis player in Hong Kong history, having broken into the top 300 and later the top 150 in the ATP rankings. Wong also made history as the first male player from Hong Kong to qualify for and play in the main draw of a Masters 1000-level event, at the Miami Open. In that tournament, he defeated the then-world No. 89 Hugo Gaston and the then-world No. 97 Sumit Nagal. In March 2025, Wong scored a second-round upset over No. 13 seed Ben Shelton at the Miami Open, which marked the first time a player representing Hong Kong had defeated a Top 20 player since the ATP rankings were published in 1973. His first-round win over Germany's Daniel Altmaier in Miami was also the first ATP Masters 1000-level win for a player from Hong Kong.

Wong's junior career was also marked by success. He won the 2018 Orange Bowl singles under-14 junior tennis tournament. In 2021, he partnered with Max Westphal to win the US Open Boys' doubles title, becoming only the second player representing Hong Kong to claim a Grand Slam title, following Patricia Hy's 1983 Wimbledon title in Girls' doubles. He followed that up with a win at the 2022 Australian Open Boys' doubles event with Bruno Kuzuhara. He reached the semifinals in Boys' Singles at the 2022 US Open, which is the best result ever for a Hong Kong male tennis player in any Grand Slam tournament.

Wong, who trains at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Majorca, Spain, is also a student at the University of Hong Kong. He represents Hong Kong in the Davis Cup, with a W/L record of 18–7.

As Coleman Wong stands on the precipice of history at the US Open, his journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring tennis players in Hong Kong and a source of pride for the city. His final qualifying match against Billy Harris is scheduled for August 22, 2025.
