Gurvinder Johal, a 37-year-old man of Indian origin, was fatally stabbed inside a Lloyds Bank branch in Derby, England, on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. The incident occurred on St. Peter's Street in the city center at approximately 2:30 PM.

Responding to reports of the stabbing, Derbyshire Constabulary officers arrived at the scene, but Johal was pronounced dead. Following an investigation, Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur, a 47-year-old of Somali origin, was charged with Johal's murder on Thursday, May 8, 2025.

Nur appeared in Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court via video link, where he confirmed his name and age through a Somali interpreter. He was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear before Derby Crown Court on Friday.

The Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor in the East Midlands, Samanatha Shallow, confirmed the charges after a review of the evidence provided by Derbyshire Constabulary. She also reminded the public that criminal proceedings are active and cautioned against any online commentary or sharing of information that could prejudice the trial.

A second man, who was arrested in connection with the stabbing, has been released without further action.

Johal was known to friends as Danny and owned the Hen and Chickens Bar and Grill restaurant in Shelton Lock. Councillor Ajit Atwal, a close friend and leader of the Lib Dem group on Derby City Council, described Johal's death as "senseless". He remembered Johal as a hardworking, devoted family man and a humble, kind, and generous person. Atwal stated that Johal's family is devastated and struggling to understand the tragedy.

District Judge Stephen Flint, during Nur's court appearance, offered his condolences to Johal's family and loved ones. The hearing was attended by approximately 15 family members of the victim.
