Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder, Kamal Haasan, has weighed in on the massive turnout at actor-politician Vijay's rallies, stating that large crowds do not necessarily translate into votes. Haasan emphasized that this principle applies to all leaders, including himself and Vijay, who heads the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
Haasan's remarks come amidst growing buzz around Vijay's entry into politics and the significant crowds he has been drawing at his rallies. When asked about the criticism that these "entire crowds" will not get converted into votes, Haasan told reporters on September 21, 2025: "It is for sure, it will not get converted into votes, it is applicable to all leaders". He further clarified that this norm applies to TVK chief Vijay, stating, "When it is applicable to all leaders, how can we exclude Vijay? It is applicable to me and all the leaders in India, you have attracted crowd but that will not get converted into votes".
Ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Haasan offered advice to Vijay, urging him to "Go on the right path, proceed with courage and do good for the people and this is my appeal to all leaders". He also noted that criticism is common in both politics and cinema.
Vijay, however, has addressed the skepticism surrounding his rallies. At a rally in Tiruvarur on September 20, 2025, he questioned the crowd whether their participation was "empty," drawing a resounding response of "Vijay" chants, suggesting that their loyalty may indeed translate into votes. Vijay has stated that TVK's objective is to usher in a "true democracy, one that has a conscience". He has also emphasized his vision to build a state free from corruption, poverty, and dynastic control.
Haasan's comments highlight the unpredictable nature of political support and the challenges of converting mass enthusiasm into actual votes. While Vijay's rallies have generated significant momentum and energized TVK cadres, Haasan's warning underscores the importance of organizational strength and voter trust. With the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections scheduled for early 2026, the entry of Vijay's TVK and the exchanges with veteran politicians like Kamal Haasan signal an evolving political landscape in the state.
