Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has reaffirmed the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's (DMK) unwavering support for the Muslim community, emphasizing the party's commitment to protecting their rights. Speaking at an event in Chennai commemorating the 1,500th birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad on Sunday, September 21, 2025, Stalin highlighted the DMK's historical ties with the Muslim community and criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) for their alleged anti-Muslim stances.
Stalin recalled the DMK's opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the triple talaq law, while pointing out the AIADMK's alignment with the BJP on these issues in Parliament. He stated that the DMK fought sincerely against the CAA, and reminded the gathering how the AIADMK voted in support of the triple talaq law. He also criticized the BJP-led Union government over the proposed Waqf law amendments, noting that a stay order was secured from the Supreme Court due to the legal fight of the DMK and others.
The Chief Minister accused the AIADMK of "double standards" on key issues, including the CAA and the Triple Talaq law. Without directly naming the AIADMK leader, Stalin urged Muslims to boycott those who support the BJP's "cheap, despotic, autocratic politics". He reminded participants that Muslims were lathi-charged during protests against the CAA under the AIADMK's rule.
Stalin highlighted several initiatives undertaken by the DMK government to address long-standing demands of the Muslim community. These include the 3.5% internal reservation for backward-class Muslims, inclusion of Urdu-speaking Muslims under backward classes, establishment of the minorities welfare board, the Tamil Nadu minorities economic development corporation, and the Urdu academy. He also reminded the gathering that former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi declared a public holiday on the Prophet's birthday in 1969, which was later cancelled by the AIADMK in 2001 and restored by the DMK government in 2006.
Responding to a request from SDPI leader Nellai Mubarak to include Prophet Muhammad's teachings in the school curriculum, Stalin clarified that content on the Prophet is already part of the syllabus. He assured that the requests of the Muslim community would be considered and that the DMK would be the first political outfit to support Muslims in times of trouble.
Stalin also reiterated his concern for the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza, urging the Union government to take a firm stand. He emphasized the importance of unity among marginalized groups for political success in Tamil Nadu and assured that the DMK would always be one among the Muslim community, protecting their rights.
In his address, Stalin praised the egalitarian and loving principles preached by Prophet Muhammad, aligning them with the ideologies of Tamil reformist leaders such as Periyar E.V. Ramasamy and iconic DMK figures C.N. Annadurai and M. Karunanidhi. He emphasized Prophet Muhammad's compassion for the poor and his call for the wealthy to share their wealth with the needy.
