The film Mercy, featuring Raj Vasudeva and Adil Hussain, has been making waves on the international film festival circuit, going from Cannes to the Chicago South Asian Film Festival (CSAFF). The film, directed by Mitul Patel, tackles the sensitive and controversial subject of euthanasia.
Mercy tells the story of Shekhar, played by Raj Vasudeva, who faces the agonizing decision of whether to end his terminally ill mother's suffering on Christmas Eve. The film explores the complexities of family dynamics, moral dilemmas, and the emotional turmoil surrounding end-of-life decisions. The cast also includes Niharica Raizada, Kunal Bhan, and Aparna Ghosal. Adil Hussain plays Father Joel, the family's spiritual anchor during their most challenging times.
The trailer for Mercy was launched at the Bharat Pavilion during the Cannes Film Festival, where it received a warm reception. Raj Vasudeva expressed his hope that the film's reception would extend worldwide, particularly in India, emphasizing the importance of discussing the "off the beaten track" subject matter.
Following its debut at Cannes, Mercy has been screened at several film festivals, including the UK Asian Film Festival, the Indian International Film Festival Stuttgart, and the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.
The Chicago South Asian Film Festival (CSAFF) is one of North America's largest annual South Asian events. The 16th annual CSAFF will be held from September 14 to 21, 2025. CSAFF is dedicated to promoting diversity in the Chicago area through international cinema, conversation, and culture. The festival provides a platform for South Asian talent, stories, and themes. CSAFF features film screenings, panel discussions, speaker series, workshops, film awards, receptions, after-parties, and networking events.
After its screening at the Chicago South Asian Film Festival, Mercy continued its festival journey, with nominations for Best Film and Best Actor (Raj Vasudeva) at the Love and Hope International Film Festival in Barcelona, followed by a screening at the London Independent Film Festival.
Raj Vasudeva described Mercy as a reflection on the quiet, often unspoken emotions surrounding loss, exploring the strength it takes to make peace with the inevitable and the love that continues even in the act of letting go. Adil Hussain added that the film is about the silent space where grief, love, and responsibility collide, forcing one to make a decision not with the head but with a breaking heart.
Mercy is produced by Everclear Films, with Raj Vasudeva and Anuradha Sachdev as producers. The film marks Mitul Patel's feature film directorial debut.
