A Delhi court has recently granted permission for the extradition of Naijil Paul, a British citizen of Indian origin, to the United Kingdom. Paul is wanted to face trial in Scotland on multiple charges of sexual offenses, including rape, sexual assault, and indecent communication involving three women.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Pranav Joshi issued the extradition order on June 9, 2025, following a formal request from the UK government. Paul had previously consented to his extradition, which led the court to forgo the cross-examination of witnesses in the case.

After being charged with the offenses, Paul fled to India. He was eventually apprehended in Kochi, Kerala, and subsequently transferred to Delhi, where he has been held in judicial custody. The extradition request from the UK was received by the Ministry of External Affairs, which initiated proceedings on December 24, 2024.

The court order stated, "It is requested that the Union of India extradite the fugitive criminal Naijil Paul to the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to stand trial on charges before the High Court of Judiciary at Glasgow, Scotland, through diplomatic channels."

The court has mandated that Paul remain in judicial custody at the Tihar Jail complex until all extradition procedures are finalized. The Jail Superintendent is also required to present him before the court via video conferencing every week until his transfer.

According to case records, the alleged offenses occurred between January and August 2018. During this time, Paul was employed at a care home in Hamilton, Scotland. He appeared before the local sheriff court in August 2018 and again in January 2019, when the charges against him were formally framed. It is alleged that he committed sexual offences against three women while working at the care home. He failed to appear before the High Court.
