In Odisha's Boudh district, a dangerous stunt performed by a 12-year-old boy for social media has prompted the Railway Protection Force (RPF) to lodge a First Information Report (FIR). The incident, which involved the boy lying on a railway track as a train passed over him, was filmed by his 15-year-old friend and subsequently went viral.

The incident occurred on June 29 near Talupali, close to Purunapani station, shortly after Boudh district gained new train connectivity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated two new trains connecting Boudh and Purunakatak stations on June 20, following the completion of the Sonepur-Purunakatak section of the Khurda Road-Balangir line.

The video of the stunt sparked immediate concern and action from railway authorities. The East Coast Railway (ECoR) issued a strong warning against such dangerous acts, emphasizing the severe risks to life and safety. The RPF at Balangir swiftly responded to the video, coordinating with the local Baunsuni Police and villagers to identify the children involved.

According to reports, the RPF team, accompanied by villagers and the children's parents/guardians, visited the incident spot between Purnapani and Jharmunda Railway Stations. The two minors were taken to the RPF Post at Balangir, where a case was registered against them under Sections 153, 145(b), and 147 of the Railways Act, 1989. Further legal proceedings are being carried out in accordance with the Juvenile Justice Act (JJ Act), under the supervision of their parents/guardians.

RPF Inspector stated that such stunts could result in fatalities and that an inquiry was launched immediately upon receiving the video. The inspector added that the minors and their parents were being counselled, and an awareness drive was initiated to educate people about the risks of such stunts. The minors may also be produced before the Juvenile Justice Board for a hearing.

The ECoR has consistently conducted safety campaigns at stations, schools, and villages along the railway line, utilizing digital and print media to raise awareness. They reiterated that railway tracks are not meant for social media content creation or thrill-seeking activities, as trespassing endangers lives and disrupts railway operations.

This incident highlights a growing trend of individuals, particularly young people, performing dangerous stunts on railway tracks to create viral content for social media. Authorities are concerned that a lack of awareness regarding railway safety laws and the potential consequences contributes to such behavior. The ECoR urges the public, especially parents and educators, to educate children about the severe risks involved.
