Lily Collins Returns to "Emily in Paris" After Assistant Director's Heartbreaking Loss on Set.

The "Emily in Paris" production has resumed filming in Venice, Italy, following the tragic and sudden death of assistant director Diego Borella. Borella, aged 47, passed away on August 21st while working on the set of the show's fifth season.

According to reports, Borella collapsed during preparations for a scene at the Hotel Danieli in Venice. Medical personnel on location attempted to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. A local doctor stated that Borella likely died of a sudden heart attack.

Production was temporarily halted after the incident but resumed on August 23rd. Lily Collins, who plays the titular character Emily Cooper, was seen back on set with co-stars including Eugenio Franceschini, Ashley Park, and Paul Forman. They were photographed filming on a boat in Venice.

A spokesperson for Paramount Television Studios released a statement confirming Borella's death: "We are deeply saddened to confirm the sudden passing of a member of the 'Emily in Paris' production family. Our hearts go out to the individual's family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time".

Borella was a locally hired third assistant director for "Emily in Paris". He had a diverse background, with experience in literature and visual arts, and had trained in Rome, London, and New York.

Filming for the fifth season of "Emily in Paris" began in Italy on August 15th and is scheduled to wrap up on August 25th. The season is expected to premiere on Netflix on December 18, 2025.

Prior to the tragedy, Lily Collins had shared behind-the-scenes glimpses of her time in Venice on social media, including photos with co-star Ashley Park. In one post, she wrote, "Joy ride to and from work with the best…". She had also posted other photos of herself enjoying the Italian sights while filming on a boat, captioning it, "A very Venetian getaway. When work becomes play…".

The cast and crew are mourning the loss of their colleague as they continue filming the fifth season of "Emily in Paris".
