Chitrangda Singh has recently spoken out about the challenges she has faced in her Bollywood career, particularly how being typecast as a "seductress" limited the roles she was offered. The actress, known for her versatile performances, revealed that this image often led filmmakers to hesitate in approaching her for diverse projects.
Singh believes that this perception, in part, stems from her bold appearance in the song "Aao Raja" from the film Gabbar Is Back. Following the song's release, she received a flood of similar offers, restricting her opportunities to explore a wider range of characters. She told Bollywood Bubble that this typecasting made her feel boxed in as an actor.
In an interview with Hindustan Times, Singh mentioned that filmmakers often assume she doesn't live in Mumbai, which makes them reluctant to offer her roles. She clarified that she frequently hears misconceptions about her living situation, with people believing she divides her time between two cities, leading to uncertainty about her availability. This, coupled with her "seductress" image, has further restricted the variety of roles she has been offered.
Singh admitted that one of the toughest parts of being an actor is navigating the waiting period between projects. She noted that creative individuals often have to decline roles that don't align with their artistic vision, even when they are not actively working. She described this challenging phase as the "bane" of the profession.
The actress also addressed the importance of rejecting repetitive roles to maintain artistic integrity. She showcased her range through diverse characters, such as Nandini Basak in Khakee: The Bengal Chapter, where she played a fierce Leader of the Opposition. This role allowed her to break away from the glamorous stereotype and prove her mettle as a talented performer.
Singh revealed that rejecting roles that didn't align with her artistic vision was not an easy decision. She admitted that actors who decline such offers risk being labeled as "too choosy" or difficult to work with. However, she believes that accepting mediocre work can shorten an actor's career and diminish their impact. By consciously turning down roles that relied on objectification, Singh has sought to preserve her identity as a serious performer. She emphasized that constantly repeating similar work can overshadow an actor's true potential and lead to a gradual decline in audience interest.
Despite these challenges, Singh remains committed to her craft. She believes that taking on meaningful and varied roles is crucial for sustaining a long and respected career in the film industry. According to her, actors must be discerning and patient, waiting for projects that showcase their talent rather than simply accepting offers for visibility.
Looking ahead, Chitrangda Singh is set to appear in Battle of Galwan alongside Salman Khan. She was last seen in Housefull 4 with Akshay Kumar.
