Amidst the heavy downpours and severe flooding that have recently plagued Punjab, prominent singer and musician Guru Randhawa has stepped forward to provide crucial assistance to affected communities. Randhawa, expressing solidarity with his home state, declared "God Bless My Punjab" as he initiated relief efforts, setting up camps to aid those displaced and impacted by the natural disaster.
The torrential rains, which have caused rivers like the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi to overflow, have created havoc in several districts of Punjab. An unprecedented 14.11 lakh cusecs of water surged into the Ravi River, surpassing the levels recorded during the devastating floods of 1988. This massive inflow from the hilly regions has resulted in widespread inundation, affecting thousands of people and vast acres of agricultural land.
Guru Randhawa, known for his hit songs and connection to his roots, announced his initiative on Instagram, urging everyone to contribute in any way possible. He stated that he has set up help camps near his village Dharowali and in the Dera Baba Nanak area. Randhawa also shared a contact number for those seeking assistance, demonstrating his commitment to serving humanity in times of crisis.
The floods have impacted several districts including Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Fazilka, and Ferozepur. Over 40 villages in the Ajnala sub-division of Amritsar have been submerged due to the rising Ravi River, complicating rescue operations. An estimated 14,000 people are believed to be affected in this area alone.
In response to the critical situation, various agencies including the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Punjab Police are working together to conduct rescue and relief operations. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has also intensified its efforts, deploying Mi-17 and Chinook helicopters to evacuate stranded civilians from inundated areas. The IAF has conducted over 55 sorties, rescuing 215 individuals and delivering 7,300 kilograms of essential relief materials.
The Punjab government has also stepped up its efforts, with ministers and local MLAs visiting flood-affected areas to provide aid. Relief in the form of food, fodder for cattle, medicines, and other essential supplies is being delivered to affected families. The Amritsar district administration, with support from the Red Cross, has distributed thousands of water bottles and food packets. Medical teams, along with ambulances and medicines, have been stationed to cater to the affected population.
Several organizations, including UNITED SIKHS, have launched humanitarian relief operations to assist displaced families and provide medical support. Relief camps have been established in severely affected villages to offer medical care, food, and clean water.
As rescue and relief operations continue, the efforts of individuals like Guru Randhawa and various organizations provide a beacon of hope for those affected by the devastating floods in Punjab. The collective effort to provide assistance, medical care, and essential supplies underscores the resilience and community spirit during these challenging times.
