Paresh Rawal has strongly reacted to the backlash surrounding the film "Ajey: The Untold Story of a Yogi," a biopic on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and has criticized the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for its handling of the film. The movie's release, initially slated for August 1st, faced delays due to censorship issues. The CBFC demanded 29 cuts and a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the UP CM, which led to controversy.
Rawal, who plays Mahant Avaidyanath in the film, expressed his frustration over the CBFC's demands. He questioned why the CBFC was scrutinizing their film, which is based on an existing book, "The Monk Who Became Chief Minister" by Shantanu Gupta, that has been available for nearly a decade without any objections. He further criticized the CBFC for not censoring films with explicit content while raising objections to "Ajey". He stated that telling truthful and blunt stories often leads to rejection, emphasizing that intentions matter more than public opinion and urging creators to focus on honesty in their work.
The Bombay High Court eventually instructed the CBFC to certify the film for theatrical release without any alterations. Rawal praised the judiciary for saving the film, expressing uncertainty as to why the censors held it up. He noted that the court asked the CBFC to provide solid reasons for stopping the film.
Rawal also addressed the film's potential to be perceived as propaganda, stating that the film's creator, Ajay Mengi, had no ulterior motives, such as securing a Rajya Sabha seat. He emphasized that Mengi wasn't seeking any personal gain from the film. Rawal also shared his personal impressions of Yogi Adityanath, describing him as a man of steel with the qualities needed for a state like Uttar Pradesh.
Dinesh Lal Yadav, also known as Nirahua, who stars in "Ajey," echoed Rawal's sentiments, expressing his disappointment over the CBFC's decision to deny certification without properly viewing the film. He urged audiences not to make the same mistake and to avoid forming opinions before watching the movie. Nirahua emphasized that the film should be appreciated beyond any political or ideological biases.
Rawal also commented on the film's box office clash with "Jolly LLB 3," sending good wishes to the makers and expressing that everyone involved is part of the same industry.
"Ajey: The Untold Story of a Yogi," directed by Ravindra Gautam, features Anant Joshi as Yogi Adityanath, along with Paresh Rawal, Sarwar Ahuja, and Rajesh Khattar in key roles.
