The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has suspended MLA Rahul Mamkootathil from the party's primary membership for six months, effective Monday, August 25, 2025, following allegations of sexual misconduct. The suspension comes amid mounting protests and calls for his resignation from his MLA post.
The decision to suspend Rahul Mamkootathil was made after a meeting held on Sunday by the KPCC Disciplinary Panel. The party will also seek an explanation from Rahul Mamkootathil regarding the allegations of inappropriate behavior raised by women.
Rahul Mamkootathil has faced controversy after Malayalam actor Rini George accused an unnamed youth leader of inappropriate conduct. He had previously resigned as Kerala Youth Congress president after allegations surfaced against him, including accusations of forcing abortions and threatening women. More women have come forward with sexual allegations against Rahul after he denied the allegations leveled by actress Rini Ann George during a press conference on Thursday. Screenshots of alleged chats of Rahul Mamkootathil have also surfaced.
Despite the suspension, Rahul Mamkootathil will continue to serve as an MLA. However, it is reported that the party has asked him to take leave from the assembly. Some within the party believe that Rahul continuing as MLA will be a setback for the party in the next assembly elections and that he will not be fielded in the next assembly elections.
UDF convenor Adoor Prakash stated that those who expected Rahul Mamkootathil's resignation would be disappointed. He said that mistakes need to be proven before a resignation should occur and that decisions cannot be made unilaterally.
Several Congress leaders, including Uma Thomas, Shanimol Usman, K Muraleedharan, and Ramesh Chennithala, had demanded Rahul's resignation. K Muraleedharan said that the party suspended the MLA after considering the seriousness of the allegations against him, even though no written complaint had been filed.
The suspension from the party's membership is being perceived as a severe punitive action for his alleged misconduct. If the explanation is not satisfactory, the move is to expel him from the party.
