Rajinikanth's "Coolie," directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has experienced a slowdown in its box office earnings after a strong initial run. The film, which was released on August 14, 2025, coinciding with India's Independence Day and marking Rajinikanth's 50th year in the film industry, has become the 4th highest-grossing Tamil movie.
Box Office Performance
On its second Tuesday, Day 13 of release, "Coolie" earned approximately ₹3.25 crore (India net) across all languages, according to early estimates by Sacnilk. This brings the film's total collection to ₹263.85 crore. Notably, the Day 13 earnings were nearly identical to Day 12, when the film also collected ₹3.25 crore, marking the lowest single-day earning up to that point.
The film's occupancy rates on Day 13 reflect this dip, with the Tamil version recording 15.14% occupancy, Hindi at 15.67%, and Telugu at 15.03%. These figures indicate a slowdown in weekday business across all versions after a high-energy first week.
Comparison with "War 2"
"Coolie" faced competition from Ayan Mukerji's "War 2," starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, which was released on the same day. Despite the slowdown, "Coolie" has managed to stay ahead of "War 2" in the box office race. On Day 13, "Coolie" collected ₹3.25 crore net, while "War 2" brought in ₹2.75 crore, pushing "War 2's" total to ₹227.25 crore.
Worldwide Collections
As of Day 12, "Coolie" had earned a gross of ₹483.5 crore globally, with ₹308.85 crore from India and ₹174.65 crore from overseas. The Day 13 global earnings were expected to be published on Wednesday. Some reports indicate that the film has already crossed the ₹500 crore mark worldwide. In North America, the film has collected over $6.8 million (₹59 crore), and at the Australian box office, it made an estimated $1.4 million (₹7 crore).
Factors Influencing Performance
Several factors have influenced "Coolie's" box office performance. The film's release in five languages—Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada—has boosted its pan-India appeal. The cast includes Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj, Shruti Haasan, Reba Monica John, Junior MGR, and Monisha Blessy, with cameos from Aamir Khan and Pooja Hegde. However, the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in India may have also impacted its weekday performance.
Despite the recent dip in earnings, "Coolie" has had a successful run, becoming one of the highest-grossing films in Tamil and Rajinikanth's second film to approach the ₹500 crore mark worldwide post-pandemic.
