The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given its approval to India's bid to host the Commonwealth Games (CWG) in 2030, with Ahmedabad as the proposed host city. This decision marks a significant step in India's ambition to showcase its sporting infrastructure and capabilities on a global stage.

The Cabinet's approval extends to the signing of the Host City Collaboration Agreement (HCA), along with necessary guarantees from relevant ministries, departments, and authorities. It also includes the sanctioning of grants-in-aid to the Gujarat government, contingent upon the bid's acceptance.

Ahmedabad is considered an ideal host city, boasting world-class stadiums, cutting-edge training facilities, and a vibrant sporting culture. The Narendra Modi Stadium, the world's largest stadium, has already demonstrated its ability to host major events, including the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Final.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had previously approved the bid during a Special General Meeting (SGM). During the meeting, the audited statement of accounts for the financial year 2023-24 and the appointment of a statutory auditor for 2024-25 were also discussed. Proposals are expected to be submitted by August 31, with Commonwealth Sport anticipated to announce the host city in November.

Hosting the Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad is projected to have a multifaceted positive impact. It is expected to boost tourism, create employment opportunities, and inspire millions of young athletes to pursue sports. The event is anticipated to attract a large influx of athletes, coaches, technical officials, tourists, and media personnel, benefiting local businesses and generating revenue.

Beyond the immediate economic benefits, hosting the CWG is expected to foster a strong sense of national pride and unity. It would provide a shared national experience and boost the morale of the nation. Moreover, it is expected to inspire a new generation of athletes to consider sports as a career and encourage greater participation in sports at all levels. The event is also expected to provide opportunities for professionals in various fields such as sports science, event operations and management, logistics and transport coordination, broadcast and media, IT and communications, and public relations.

In June, a delegation led by Harsh Sanghavi, Minister of Sports, Government of Gujarat, met with officials from Commonwealth Sport to gain insights into the bid framework for the 2030 Games. The meeting covered aspects such as vision and legacy plans, governance and institutional support, sustainability, transport strategy, sports program, accessibility, infrastructure planning, athlete services, and Games-time operations.
