The Consulate General of India in Seattle has officially inaugurated its new chancery premises. The inauguration ceremony, held on August 26, 2025, was performed by the Indian Ambassador to the US, Vinay Kwatra.
The new chancery is located at 1015 2nd Avenue in downtown Seattle, within the historic Federal Reserve Building. This building previously served as the Seattle branch of the Federal Bank of San Francisco from 1951 to 2008 and was added to the US National Register of Historic Places in 2013. The consulate occupies two floors of the building. The first floor is dedicated to the Consular Section, providing public services. The Administrative and Commercial wings are located on the 11th floor.
The inauguration was attended by several prominent figures, including Washington State Governor Bob Ferguson, US Senator Maria Cantwell, and Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell. Governor Ferguson welcomed the opening of the new consulate, emphasizing its importance in strengthening bilateral ties between India and the US Pacific Northwest region.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi initially announced the initiative to establish the consulate in June 2023. The consulate began operations from a temporary location in November 2023. Since July 2024, it has served 23,722 applicants from nine U.S. states: Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Nebraska.
Following the inauguration, Ambassador Kwatra met with members of the Indian American community, senior technology executives from Seattle, and elected officials from Washington State, including Indian-origin leaders holding public office. The establishment of the Seattle consulate marks the sixth Indian consulate in the United States.
