Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a two-day visit to Japan, commencing on August 29, 2025, to attend the 15th Annual Summit at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. Prior to his departure, PM Modi emphasized that the visit would focus on strengthening the Special Strategic and Global Partnership between India and Japan, with a particular emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductors. Following his engagements in Japan, the Prime Minister will travel to Tianjin, China, to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.

PM Modi highlighted the importance of expanding collaboration in new and emerging technologies, specifically AI and semiconductors, to give "new wings" to the partnership between the two nations and broaden the scope of economic and investment ties. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) shared a statement where Modi expressed confidence that his visits to Japan and China would advance India's national interests, contribute to regional and global peace, security, and sustainable development. He also acknowledged the opportunity to strengthen civilizational and cultural bonds.

The agenda includes deepening defense cooperation, advancing economic and technology partnerships, and reinforcing engagement in the Indo-Pacific region. This visit marks the 15th India-Japan summit and PM Modi's first meeting with his Japanese counterpart, Shigeru Ishiba.

Japan is expected to elevate its private-sector investment target in India from five trillion yen to ten trillion yen (approximately $68 billion) over the next decade. This increase signifies a strong vote of confidence that aligns with India's 'Make in India' and 'Make for the World' initiatives. Both governments are also planning to launch an Economic Security Initiative, a new bilateral cooperation framework designed to address economic security challenges, such as ensuring stable supplies of critical materials and guaranteeing the safety of core infrastructure.

Furthermore, a project called Digital Partnership 2.0 will be developed to expand economic collaboration beyond manufacturing to encompass emerging technological fields, such as semiconductors, AI, and startups. As part of India's first high-speed rail project, which is based on Japan's Shinkansen technology, an agreement is expected to be reached on the introduction of the next-generation E10 series bullet train.

During the visit, PM Modi and PM Ishiba are expected to launch an initiative for resilient supply chains in the critical minerals sector and AI. They will also visit a semiconductor factory and inspect the Tohoku Shinkansen factory of the East Japan Railway Company. The two leaders will also discuss the India-Japan Indo-Pacific plans for the Quad summit.

In addition to his engagements in Japan, PM Modi will proceed to Tianjin, China, to participate in the SCO Summit hosted by President Xi Jinping. India, recognized as an active and constructive member of the SCO, has introduced initiatives in innovation, health, and cultural collaboration during its presidency. On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with President Xi Jinping, President Vladimir Putin, and other regional leaders. The overarching goal of the visit is to promote peace, security, and sustainable development across Asia and beyond.
