The official trailer for Yorgos Lanthimos's upcoming sci-fi black comedy, Bugonia, has been released by Universal Pictures. The film, starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, is set to be released in UK and Ireland cinemas in October 2025. Focus Features will release the film in limited theaters on October 24 before expanding wide on October 31.
Bugonia is an English-language remake of Jang Joon-hwan's 2003 South Korean film, Save the Green Planet!. The plot revolves around two conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, believing she is an alien intent on destroying Earth. Stone plays the role of the CEO. After being chained in a basement, a battle ensues between the captors and the corporate executive, becoming unexpectedly moving.
The film stars Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias, and Alicia Silverstone. Bugonia reunites Lanthimos and Stone after their collaboration in Poor Things, which won four Oscars. Will Tracy (The Menu) wrote the screenplay.
Lanthimos said he wanted to challenge viewers' judgment calls about certain kinds of people. He added that technology enhances certain bubbles that people live in, creating a chasm between them.
Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar) is among the producers on the project, along with Lanthimos and Stone.
The original Save the Green Planet followed a disillusioned young man who captures and tortures a businessman he believes to be part of an alien invasion. A battle of wits ensues between the captor, his girlfriend, the businessman, and a private detective.
The trailer features Chappell Roan's "Good Luck, Babe!". The film is currently in competition at the Venice Film Festival.
