The Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor starrer, 'Param Sundari,' has finally hit the big screens, generating considerable buzz for its unique intercultural love story and the fresh pairing of the lead actors. Directed by Tushar Jalota, the romantic comedy earned an estimated ₹7.25 crore on its opening day.
However, despite the anticipation, the opening day box office numbers didn't reach double digits. According to Sacnilk, the movie had an overall 12.92% Hindi occupancy on Friday. Morning shows started with 8.19% occupancy, which increased to 11.45% in the afternoon, 12.27% in the evening, and a high of 19.77% for the night shows, indicating that fans preferred watching the film later in the day. Chennai recorded the highest regional occupancy at 24.75%, while Surat had the lowest at 4%.
When compared to 'Saiyaara,' one of Bollywood's most successful romantic movies, 'Param Sundari' had a slower start. 'Saiyaara' opened with ₹21.5 crore, significantly higher than 'Param Sundari's' ₹7.25 crore. This means 'Param Sundari's' opening day collection is about 65% less than 'Saiyaara'. However, 'Saiyaara' is an intense love story, and if considering only rom-coms, 'Param Sundari' has performed decently. In comparison, 'Bhool Chuk Maaf' opened with ₹7 crore in May, and 'Son Of Sardaar' made ₹7.25 crore on its opening day.
For Sidharth Malhotra, 'Param Sundari' marks his fifth-biggest opening, following 'Ek Villain' (₹16.72 crores), 'Brothers' (₹15.20 crores), 'Thank God' (₹8.10 crores), and 'Student Of The Year' (₹7.48 crores). It's been nine years since Malhotra had a double-digit opening, a milestone that 'Param Sundari' missed. For Janhvi Kapoor, 'Param Sundari' is her second-best opening, with her debut film 'Dhadak' leading at ₹8.71 crores.
Despite the mixed reviews and a predictable storyline, 'Param Sundari' has surpassed other romantic openings of 2025, except for 'Saiyaara'. It has pushed 'Dhadak 2' out of the top 5 romantic openers of 2025 and has performed better than Maddock Films' previous rom-com, 'Bhool Chuk Maaf'.
The film faces competition from other movies like 'War 2' and 'Mahavatar Narsimha'. 'War 2' experienced a sharp decline, earning only ₹0.65 crore on its third Friday, coinciding with the release of 'Param Sundari'. 'Mahavatar Narsimha' has slowed down after 36 days, collecting ₹0.1 crore in Kannada, ₹0.31 crore in Telugu, ₹0.66 crore in Hindi, ₹2.54 crore in Tamil, and ₹0.53 crore in Malayalam on its 36th day.
'Param Sundari' revolves around a cross-cultural romance between characters from Delhi and Kerala. The film's budget is ₹60 crores, and the opening day collection accounts for approximately 12% of the budget recovery. The film's India net collection on day 1 is ₹7.37 crores, with a gross of ₹8.69 crores.
In conclusion, 'Param Sundari' had a decent opening day, collecting ₹7.25 crore. While it is significantly lower than 'Saiyaara's' opening, it is a fair start for a romantic comedy without a holiday release. The film's performance in the coming days will determine its success at the box office.
