A distressing incident has come to light in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, where a woman was reportedly caught on video thrashing her husband's 87-year-old uncle. The video, which went viral on social media, depicts the woman assaulting the elderly man as he lay on a cot.
According to reports, the incident occurred in Saray Kalyandev, which falls under the Antu police station area. The elderly man, identified as Vishwanath Tiwari, is unmarried and lives with his nephew, Omkarnath. Omkarnath is employed in Uttarakhand, and his wife, Sunita Tiwari, stays at home to care for Vishwanath. Vishwanath Tiwari has reportedly made a will, bequeathing his property to his brother's sons.
After the video of the assault circulated widely, the police took cognizance of the matter and initiated an investigation. Statements were recorded from Vishwanath Tiwari, Sunita Tiwari, and other villagers. Station House Officer Anandpal Bhadauriya stated that Vishwanath Tiwari's mental condition is not sound. He also noted that Sunita Tiwari is the sole caregiver for the elderly man.
While the precise reasons for the assault remain unclear, some reports suggest that Sunita Tiwari acted out of anger. It has also been reported that she has since apologized to Vishwanath Tiwari.
This incident has brought the issue of elder abuse into sharp focus. Elder abuse is a growing concern in India, with various forms of mistreatment, including emotional, financial, and physical abuse, being reported. Studies indicate that a significant percentage of elderly individuals experience abuse at the hands of family members. A HelpAge India survey revealed that nearly 25% of elderly respondents admitted that family members were the main perpetrators of abuse.
Several factors contribute to elder abuse, including changing family structures, economic instability, and a decline in the traditional respect afforded to elders. Property disputes, financial problems, and a lack of patience on the part of caregivers can also play a role.
The under-reporting of elder abuse is a significant challenge, with many seniors remaining silent due to fear of retribution, loss of family support, social stigma, and a lack of awareness about available legal rights and support services.
The incident in Pratapgarh serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of elderly individuals and the urgent need to address elder abuse through increased awareness, support services, and legal protections. It also highlights the importance of providing adequate support and resources to caregivers, who often face significant challenges in caring for elderly family members.
