Justice Shree Chandrashekhar has been appointed as the new Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. The appointment, made by the President of India in consultation with the Chief Justice of India, was announced by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on X (formerly Twitter). This follows the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium on August 25, 2025. Justice Chandrashekhar, who was serving as the Acting Chief Justice, will succeed Justice Alok Aradhe, who has been elevated to the Supreme Court. He will be the 49th Chief Justice of Bombay High Court.
Born on May 25, 1965, Justice Chandrashekhar pursued his legal education at the Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi, graduating in 1993. He was enrolled as an Advocate with the Delhi State Bar Council on December 9, 1993, and began his legal practice in Delhi, handling both criminal and civil cases.
During his nearly 19 years as an advocate, Justice Chandrashekhar appeared in approximately 3,500 cases, predominantly before the Supreme Court. His name is associated with around 140 reported judgments of the Supreme Court. He also served as Standing Counsel for the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the State of Jharkhand in the Supreme Court. Additionally, he represented various institutions, including the Bihar State Housing Board, Bihar State Pollution Control Board, Jharkhand State Electricity Board, and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, along with numerous corporations and private entities.
Justice Chandrashekhar's judicial career commenced with his appointment as an Additional Judge of the Jharkhand High Court on January 17, 2013. He was subsequently appointed as a Permanent Judge on June 27, 2014. He later served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court from December 29, 2023, to July 4, 2024. Following this, he was transferred to the Rajasthan High Court and then to the Bombay High Court, where he was sworn in as a judge on July 21, 2025.
Justice Chandrashekhar's parent High Court is Jharkhand. He will now take over as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, which has jurisdiction over Maharashtra and Goa. He is expected to retire in May 2027.
