A dinner meeting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to host for National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Members of Parliament (MPs) on September 8th has been called off in light of the severe flooding impacting various states across India. The decision reflects solidarity with the people affected by the natural disaster, particularly in Punjab, where the situation remains dire.
In addition to the Prime Minister's dinner, a dinner program that was to be held at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President and Union Minister JP Nadda's residence was also cancelled. The NDA MPs had been asked to gather in the national capital on Saturday. The dinners were originally scheduled ahead of the Vice-Presidential elections.
Several regions of India are grappling with the impact of heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding. Punjab is particularly affected, with thousands of residents facing the brunt of the disaster, including massive crop and property loss. The flood-related death toll in Punjab has risen to 43, with fatalities reported across multiple districts. Approximately 3 lakh hectares of farmland are submerged, and there has been extensive damage to infrastructure, including roads and schools.
President Droupadi Murmu has expressed deep concern over the widespread devastation caused by the floods, acknowledging the loss of life and destruction in various states, including Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Assam. She conveyed her solidarity with those affected and commended the efforts of officials involved in rescue and relief operations.
Authorities are conducting surveys to assess the full extent of the damage caused by the floods. Relief operations are underway to provide assistance to those affected, with a focus on providing shelter, food, and medical aid.
