A Delhi court has remanded television actor Ashish Kapoor to 14 days of judicial custody in connection with an alleged rape case. The order was passed by the Tis Hazari court in Delhi. Kapoor, known for his roles in shows such as "Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai," "Saraswatichandra", "Love Marriage Ya Arranged Marriage", "Chand Chupa Badal Mein", "Dekha Ek Khwaab", "Molkki Rishton Ki Agnipariksha", "Woh Apna Sa" and "Bandini", was arrested in Pune on Wednesday, September 2, 2025, and subsequently produced before Link Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Payal Singhal.
The case against Kapoor stems from a complaint filed by a woman who accused him of sexual assault during a house party in Delhi in the second week of August. According to the FIR filed on August 11, the woman alleged that she was invited to a party in Kapoor’s neighborhood where her drink was spiked. She initially stated that Kapoor sexually assaulted her in a washroom at the party. The initial complaint also named Kapoor's friend, the friend's wife, and two unknown persons. However, the woman later revised her statement, accusing only Kapoor of the rape. She also alleged that the act was recorded on video, but police have not recovered any such footage. The woman further claimed that after the incident, Kapoor's friend's wife assaulted her outside the washroom. Police said it was Kapoor's friend's wife who made the PCR call to report the matter.
Following his arrest, Kapoor underwent a medical potency test at AIIMS. Delhi Police stated that the report from this test will serve as crucial evidence in the ongoing investigation.
The Delhi Police had sought a 5-day custody remand to investigate the case, recover the mobile phone, conduct the potency test, examine the roles of the accused, and take them to Pune, Maharashtra. On September 3, the court granted four days of police custody to facilitate the investigation. Kapoor was initially to be produced before the court on September 7, but police presented him a day earlier.
Kapoor's legal team, including advocates Deepak Sharma, Rajan Oberoi, and Somesh Oberoi, argued that the mobile phone in question was in the possession of co-accused Kapil Gupta and Ritu Gupta, who had already been granted anticipatory bail. They contended that there was no need for Kapoor's custody remand.
The investigation is still in its early stages. Police indicated that the charges of gang rape will be converted to rape as per legal procedure.
