Jason Miller, the head of a US lobbying firm hired by the Indian embassy, recently met with President Trump amidst existing trade tensions between India and the United States. Miller, a long-time advisor to Trump, shared news of the meeting on social media, posting a photo from the White House and describing it as a "fantastic week in Washington".
The meeting occurs during a period of strained relations between India and the US, largely due to trade and tariff policies. The Trump administration recently doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50%, which includes a new 25% duty on India's continued purchase of Russian crude oil. India has described the US action as "unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable".
Despite these tensions, both leaders have affirmed the importance of the India-US relationship. Trump described the relationship as "special" and stated that he will always be "friends" with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, he also expressed his disapproval of Modi's actions "at this particular moment". Modi reciprocated by highlighting the "positive strategic partnership" between the two countries.
Miller's firm, SHW Partners LLC, was reportedly hired by the Indian embassy in April for $1.8 million for a year. According to filings with the US Department of Justice, the firm is tasked with providing "strategic counsel, tactical planning," traditional lobbying services, and support in perception management and public relations. The contract is worth $150,000 a month. This is the first disclosed lobbying assignment Miller has taken since Trump returned to office.
Jason Miller is a veteran political operative who rose to prominence during Trump's 2016 campaign, where he served as the chief media spokesperson. He was considered for the role of White House communications director after Trump's election win but withdrew after allegations of an extramarital affair and pregnancy scandal involving another Trump campaign official. Despite the controversy, Miller remained a part of Donald Trump's orbit and returned to assist Trump in both his 2020 and 2024 Presidential campaigns as a key advisor. He registered as a lobbyist in 2020 through his newly set up firm SHW Partners LLC.
The purpose of Miller's meeting with Trump and other administration officials remains undisclosed. However, it is likely related to the ongoing trade tensions and efforts to improve relations between the two countries. Miller's role as a lobbyist for India, coupled with his close ties to President Trump, positions him as a key player in navigating the complex relationship between the two nations.
