In Etah, Uttar Pradesh, Reena Rajput, the sister of BJP MP Mukesh Rajput, has filed a police complaint alleging assault and harassment by her in-laws. The incident came to light after a video of the alleged assault went viral on social media.
According to the complaint, Reena Singh alleged that her father-in-law, Laxman Singh, along with her brothers-in-law, Rajesh and Girish, attacked her and threatened to kill her. She claims that on Sunday afternoon, while she was bathing, her brother-in-law Girish and father-in-law Laxman Singh attempted to record a video of her through the bathroom window. When she resisted, they allegedly verbally abused and physically assaulted her.
Singh claims that her father-in-law took out a licensed rifle and threatened her, saying, "I will shoot you". She alleged that her father-in-law also struck her with a stick. Reena further claimed that her brother-in-law Rajesh attacked her with a sharp knife, injuring her hand, while Girish assaulted her with an iron rod.
Reena Rajput's complaint describes years of domestic violence and efforts by her in-laws to force her out of the house. She says she was attacked with a rifle butt and an iron rod by family members, while neighbors watched but didn't step in. She has been married in Rani Avantibai Nagar of Etah for 17 years. Reena stated that she continues to receive threats even after the assault. She also stated, "I have two daughters, so my in-laws beat me up. They have been torturing me for a long time and for some reason they want to get rid of me". She further claimed that when the bad treatment by her in-laws did not bear any fruit, they filmed a video of her when she was having a bath. "As soon as I objected, they came out and beat me up in front of everyone. They beat me a lot with sticks and lathis (canes) and also beat my daughter," Reena said. According to the complaint, the assault took place in the presence of several people in the neighbourhood but no one stepped forward to help her.
Sahawar SHO Chaman Goswami confirmed that an FIR has been registered against Laxman Singh, Rajesh, and Girish based on her complaint. "The matter is being investigated, and strict action will be taken against the culprits as per the law," he said. Following the circulation of the video online, police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The case has drawn attention because of Rajput's political connections and highlights ongoing concerns about women's safety—even for those from prominent families. The footage has triggered strong reactions locally and increased pressure on the police to act.
